The art direction, soundscape, and overall ambiance of the game make for a mysterious atmosphere which is very well aligned with the core concept. After learning a bit about it, I was able to see that the developers did an outstanding job bringing the idea to life in video game form, even despite its inherently simplistic design. Year Walk is based on the Swedish folklore of Årsgång, which I had never heard of before playing this, and which I found to be interesting. The core concept of the game is also quite interesting. The answers to these puzzles can be a bit obscure, but there is a competent hint system if you want to avoid being stuck for too long and just want to enjoy the zen of the game. Navigating the area is your primary “challenge,” with the addition of a few puzzles you will have to solve. The gameplay is roughly 3 parts “walking-simulator” and 1 part puzzle game. If you are looking to play a traditional video game, you shouldn’t be looking here. For those who appreciate the occasional artsy game with minimal gameplay, then you will probably find Year Walk interesting, relaxing, and enjoyable. This is the type of game which won’t appeal to everyone. The gameplay is extremely minimal, while the true soul of the game lies in its ambiance, art direction, and core concept. REVIEW Year Walk is one of those abstract games that more closely resembles a piece of art than a video game. I'm sure Year Walk will leave you in awe, and wanting explore more with journal and second ending(!), and maybe to go on a Year Walk by yourself - who knows?Īnd please do one more thing: Don't expect horror. I enjoyed myself a lot, but without proper guide (thanks Hen City guest ) I would be completely miserable and wouldn't know what to do in preper manor and full sanity levels - I'm really dumb like that with puzzles in game and IRL. You wonder around, doing back and forth to progress, to reach the end, that is maaaaaaaaaaaaybe kinda predictable, but still will leave uncomfortable feeling inside you. There is not much into the mechanics, you walk left-right-forward-backwards, interact with things, but that doesn't matter at all, because story is the meat of this game.
